Solitaire (Klondike) rules
Klondike Solitaire with a single 52-card deck, drawing three cards at a time. It is played solo, and there is also a competitive mode for two players on the same deal.
Objective #
The goal is to complete the board: place all the cards on the four foundations, each one a single suit from Ace (A) to King (K). The board is complete when all four foundations are built from A to K.
In the competitive mode, the highest score wins.
Players and modes #
Solo mode
One player on their own board. There is no four-minute limit; time counts up. The server caps the gap between two messages from the player so that time does not pile up if the phone is left idle.
Competitive mode
- Two competing players, each with an independent 52-card board.
- Both players receive the same deal (the same shuffle) in the match; this is an ERAM fairness decision. After the start the boards and actions are completely independent.
- The match clock is 4:00, kept by the server.
- The match ends when the clock runs out, or when both players have reached a submitted/completed state.
- A player who finishes early may leave the screen, but the final result is settled once the match flow completes.
- The opponent sees only public progress and score, never the stock or face-down cards.
The competitive mode is built and tested but is not currently open because of the scoring-table gap (see Scoring).
The cards #
A single deck of 52 cards, with no Jokers. Colours: ♥ and ♦ are red, ♠ and ♣ are black. Ranks run from A to K.
The layout #
- 4 foundations, empty.
- 7 tableau piles of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 cards.
- In each pile only the top card is face up at the start; the cards beneath are face down.
- The remaining cards go to the stock, and the waste starts empty.
Pile number i receives i + 1 consecutive cards of the shuffled deck, and the stock is drawn from its end. The shuffle is done on the server and never leaves it; the app receives only the face-up cards, the number of face-down cards under each pile, and the stock and waste sizes.
Foundations and tableau #
Foundations
- Each foundation is for a single suit: A, then 2 … 10, then J, Q, K.
- Suits cannot be mixed.
- One card at a time moves to a foundation. A card cannot be moved back from a foundation to the tableau.
Tableau
- Build downward by exactly one rank, alternating colours (red on black, black on red).
- You may move one face-up card or a full valid face-up sequence as one block. An invalid sequence (for example, adjacent cards of the same colour) is refused.
- Face-down cards cannot be moved.
- When a move exposes a face-down card beneath, it is turned face up automatically.
- An empty pile accepts only a King (K), or a valid sequence headed by a King.
Tapping a card sends it to its foundation first if possible, otherwise to the first pile that accepts it. Auto-complete is offered only once every card is face up and the stock and waste are empty.
Stock and waste #
- Draw-3: three cards are drawn each time; the last draw may be shorter than three.
- Only the top waste card is movable.
- When the stock runs out, the waste is turned back into it (a restart) with no shuffle, keeping the Klondike order.
- The first 3 restarts are free, and each restart after the third deducts 20 points, exactly once.
Undo #
- Undo is unlimited in the competitive mode, and also works in solo.
- It reverses the full state of the move(s) exactly, including revealed cards and the stock.
- Any points earned by the reversed move are deducted/given back, so score cannot be farmed by repeating a move and undoing it.
- There is no Undo after the final Finish/Submit.
Finishing and the clock #
- You can Finish at a dead end or whenever you choose. You are asked to confirm and an authoritative score summary is shown.
- After confirming, the result is final and immutable: no actions and no Undo afterwards.
- A board with all 52 cards on the foundations closes itself as a win.
- Time comes from the server clock only. On reconnect the remaining time is restored with no reset. When time runs out, actions close atomically, and any race between Finish and timeout is settled by the server.
- In solo mode: one active game per player; leaving the screen keeps it and opening Solitaire resumes it with the same cards, score and time. A new deal records the old game as abandoned, and "restart this deal" deals the same seed again.
Scoring: what is confirmed and what is not yet published #
The full points table and the time-bonus formula have not been published yet. We do not state unconfirmed numbers. Only the following is confirmed:
| Item | Status |
|---|---|
| Highest score wins (competitive) | Confirmed |
| First 3 stock restarts | Free |
| Each restart after the third | −20 points |
| Undo | Gives back the points earned by the reversed move |
| Time bonus for finishing early | Exists, but its formula is not yet published |
| Points for foundation moves, revealing face-down cards, tableau moves, completion bonus | Final values not yet determined/published |
For this reason the game currently scores only the restart charge (−20), and the screen says that the full points table is not confirmed yet. No numbers from any other Solitaire were used. Once a final table is adopted it will be added here.
How a game ends #
- Win: all 52 cards placed on the foundations (the board closes itself as a win).
- Manual finish: once you confirm, the result is final.
- Competitive: the clock runs out (4:00), or both players reach the finish together. The highest score wins, and an exactly equal score is a draw.
- The solo history shows 10 games per page, with figures such as games played, wins, best score, fastest win and total moves.
Tips for beginners #
- Remember that an empty pile accepts only a King or a sequence headed by a King.
- Moving a card automatically turns up the face-down card beneath it.
- The first three stock restarts are free, and each later restart costs 20 points.
- Undo is unlimited and gives points back, so feel free to experiment.
- A card does not return from a foundation to the tableau, so be sure before moving it.
- Finish is final; there is no Undo afterwards.
